How estimates are calculated
Curtains: panels = ceil(window width × fullness ÷ fabric width); cut length ≈ drop + 10" hem/header, rounded up to pattern repeat, times panels. Upholstery and tablecloths add wrap or overhang. Garments use a planning factor—not a nested pattern layout.
Worked example
60" window, 84" drop, 2× fullness, 54" fabric: multiple panels and several yards before waste.
Tips
Directional prints and nap may require one-way layouts. Pre-wash fabric that will be laundered.
Common mistakes
Ignoring pattern repeats; forgetting curtain hem/header allowances.
Fabric width and nap
Quilting cotton is often 42–44" usable after selvages; apparel fabrics may be 45" or 60"; home-dec 54". Nap, one-way prints, and matching plaids can require substantially more fabric than a plain layout. For garments, treat this tool as a sanity check beside the pattern envelope’s yardage table by size and view.
Limits and how to use the results
Estimates run only in your browser. Prefer a published pattern’s tested yardage when it conflicts with this planner. Density factors and assumptions are documented on the methodology page; legal terms cover planning-use limits.
FAQ
How much fabric for curtains?
Often about 2× window width in total fabric width (fullness), times drop plus hem/header.
Yards to meters?
Results show both. 1 yard = 0.9144 meters.
